Vulcania
The Auvergne region is situated in Central France and comprises a 600 m high plateau, on which volcano massifs, single volcanos and layers of lava rest. A fascinating landscape, unique in Europe. The Vulcania scientifically orientated park was created to give visitors a better understanding of the field of volcanology. Embedded in this impressive landscape, they gain a fascinating insight into our Earth's history, and can see with their own eyes the geodynamic forces exerted on our Earth, and the phenomenon of volcanism connected therewith. Visitors can journey into time, fly over planets and observe the work of volcanologists on site.
Architect Hans Hollein was entrusted with the planning of the complex which is up to three-quarters underground. A site formed from basalt lava which is incorporated harmoniously in the unique landscape of the Auvergne. Inside, Venetian stucco in Pompeii red and natural red stone from the Jura give the visitor the feeling of being in the glowing core of the earth. Architects: Hans Hollein, Wien (A)Dl

Light from the ground
A cone 22 m high, an overground landmark, is the symbolic connection between heaven and earth. A golden relief inside which is covered in basalt lava outside reflects the daylight. Artistically staged, it appears at night like an actively glowing volcano. A great many BEGA in-ground floodlights are used for this creation.}

Pathway illumination
To ensure that the lighting is also an integral, discreet element in this overall concept, the light planner decided on BEGA luminaire 8731. This luminaire is from a series of bollards which are available in two sizes to illuminate surfaces from extremely low mounting heights with glarefree and highly concentrated light. Available either with single-sided or two-sided light output, these luminaires are extremely robust, and therefore particularly suitable for open areas. As accompanying pathway illumination, their function is to orientate, guide and also demarcate.

Museum for Modern Art, Strasbourg
The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is the most expensive and prestigious new building project for an art and culture centre since the building of the Centre Pompidou - and not in Paris but in Alsace. More than a decade passed behind the scenes in Strasbourg and Paris to realize the design of French architect Adrien Fainsilber. Situated where historic and modern Strasbourg meet, and surrounded by the waters of the idyllic Ill, this museum is an absolute must for all visitors who are interested in art and culture. The exceptionally spacious and imposing layout of the new museum building shows an impressive cross-section of the works of art from the last one and a half centuries.

Pathway Illumination
The grounds of the building are illuminated by BEGA pole-top luminaires. The light from these luminaires is directed and distributed by the top reflector, creating indirect light with a particularly soft and uniform light distribution. Light source is a high-power floodlight installed in the luminaire and directed upwards. Light distribution is rotationally symmetrical when the top reflector is adjusted in a horizontal position, and asymmetrical when the top reflector is swivelled (0 - 30°)

Dubai - a jewel in the desert
Anyone visiting Dubai for the first time will perhaps be amazed at the modern and richly contrasting cityscape. Tradition and modernity exist alongside each other in Dubai, cosmopolitanism and modernity fused together with the original Arabian culture. And this also applies to the architecture. In no time, large scale urbanization measures were implemented and the largest and most modern buildings were erected directly alongside traditional architecture. The shining surfaces, the brilliant colours and strongly expressive shapes of the new buildings produce an exciting contrast to the old architecture; traditional elements of Arabian style are combined with the latest construction technology. Direct sunlight enhances the graphic quality of the structure in the interplay of light and shade, and allows emphasis of colourfulness and characteristics of surface materials. To ensure that this effect is also retained at night, efficient and specialised lighting is required which also withstands the hot sub-tropical and at night very humid climate. Here too BEGA was once again able to provide impressive services for the projects presented here with a host of diverse products, spread over many new construction projects thanks to superior technology, the highest level of corrosion protection and excellent surface treatment.

For a high lighting level
The largest and most impressive tourism project is located at Jumeirah Beach: Burj-al-Arab, the Arabian Tower, at 320 m the highest hotel in the world. And one of the most luxurious. The architecture of this seven-star hotel is reminiscent of the Emirate’s long seafaring tradition. Located offshore on an artificial island, its shape is like that of a full-blown sail. The BEGA downlights recessed in the roof which runs around the outside of the hotel building are intended to illuminate the pool restaurant. They are recessed ceiling luminaires made of die-cast aluminium with a stainless steel front ring for 50 W tungsten halogen lamps. These luminaires are part of the comprehensive family of BEGA downlights with luminous flux ranging from 320 to 48 000 lumen. Recessed and surface-mounted luminaires for all areas of interior and exterior lighting where corrosion-resistant equipment with a high protection class is required. They have an enclosed electrical connection chamber and lamphouse and are especially well-suited for areas wherever dust and moisture are likely to soil the reflector and lamp.

With a high luminous efficiency The largest artificial deep-sea harbour in the world was constructed in Jebel-Ali, some 40 km to the south of Dubai. The trade zone thus created with its favourable general conditions has attracted companies from all over the world. No wonder that Port Rashid, in direct proximity to the centre, is one of the world’s busiest container harbours. The architecture of the new administrative building of the Department of Ports + Customs in its outward appearance formally reflects the building’s function. In the structure of ships, the twin buildings border Port Rashid’s coastline and emphasise Dubai’s long tradition as a seaport. A host of lighting tasks on the exterior of the port building were solved in an excellent manner by BEGA products. For instance, floodlighting of the facades with high power floodlights for discharge lamps HIT 2000 W, and illumination of the arcades in the entranceway with BEGA downlights as recessed ceiling luminaires. The photo on this page is a good example of how to achieve uniform illumination of a covered open space economically. The wide beam characteristics of BEGA downlights 6741 for discharge lamps HIE 250 W enable an excellent level of lighting to be achieved with just a few light spots. These luminaires are extremely robust and ballproof with glare suppression in accordance with DIN 5035. The high luminous efficiency, low level of maintenance and small number of luminaires required at low installation costs ensure economic operation.

Asymmetrical light from low mounting height Jumeirah-Beach Hotel is situated opposite to the Burj-al-Arab, the Arabian Tower,on the mainland. It is built in the shape of an immense wave, and is thus also a symbolic monument to seafaring. Both structures are notable for the exciting combination of traditional elements of Arabian style using the latest construction technology. Planned and designed with the utmost care, this hotel is an impressive example of new Arabian architecture. BEGA location luminaires 2911 and 2921 are installed on the stairways to the chalets and in the side walls surrounding the hotel complex. These are recessed wall luminaires for low voltage tungsten halogen lamps with relatively small dimensions and high light outputs. The lamps are shielded. Light distribution is wide beam horizontally and narrow beam vertically. These luminaires are designed to provide surface lighting from low mounting heights and their function is to guide and demarcate. Corrosion-resistant and reliable, they are extremely robust in construction made of stainless steel and safety glass.

Indirect light - uniform and optimum glarefree light
The slim, dynamic structure of the high-rising Emirate Towers and their exceptional height symbolize the Emirate’s economic success. The two towers are connected by a boulevard which is lined with elegant shops and boutiques, restaurants and cafés. BEGA pole top luminaires 8200 ensure uniform and glarefree lighting on the boulevards of the Twin Towers. These luminaires are designed for mounting heights of 4 000 mm where light distribution can be infinitely adjusted by swivelling the reflector. The light from the built-in high-power floodlight is directed by the top reflector, creating soft and uniform light distribution with optimum glarefree light.
