Classics in shape + light
The light planner chose BEGA pole-top luminaires 9416 for discharge lamps HME 260 W with wall arm 306 to illuminate traffic areas. The shape and construction principle of these luminaires are fascinating for their simplicity and logic.
These luminaires have been built by BEGA for over 30 years. They were the first pole-top luminaires and wall luminaires to be manufactured entirely of die cast aluminium. They are exemplary in their light output, maintenance and economic efficiency.

Into the next century
The station for the French high-speed TGV in Lyon-Satolas is a magnificent technical achievement and - apart from the construction of the Channel Tunnel and the "Great Library" in Paris - was the third largest building site during recent years in France.
With its opening in June 1994, the first multimodal traffic platform was inaugurated. It combines air, rail and road connections with a worldwide communication network.
Thanks to its functional concept, the TGV Satolas station is considered to be the pioneer of its kind for the 21st century. The bold steel, glass and concrete architecture was created by the engineer and architect Santiago Calatrava.
The most impressive building here is the station hall

Directed Light
The footbridge from the station to the parking areas - a steel construction - is illuminated by BEGA wall luminaires 2479 The luminaires are mounted on both sides to steel supports at a height of 3 m, and direct their light downwards onto the traffic area. These luminaires are of highly robust construction in protection class IP 55. They are designed for discharge lamps HME 80/125 W, and made of die cast aluminium and stainless steel. The safety glass has an optical texture, the reflector is made of pure anodized aluminium.

The Reichstag Berlin
The seat of the German government was relocated from Bonn back to Berlin in April 1999.:
The Reichstag building, as seat of the German Bundestag the most important government building, was inaugurated after redesign and renovation.
It was built 115 years ago by architect Paul Wallot. It history was eventful and lastly it also formed the object of wrapping artists Christo and Jeanne Claude.q
After a great international competition among architects, the task of its reconstruction was assigned to the architectural office of Foster and Partners, London.

The west side
The main entrance to the Reichstag is located on the west side of the building. It is so strongly structured that floodlighting from the ground was unsuitable.rcE[
The advantage of this structure, however, was that almost invisible openings, in which it was possible to insert our floodlights completely, could be incorporated into vertical walling.n
Equipment where the direction of light is adjustable, allowing great uniformity of the illuminated surface despite the limited distance. This meant an average illuminance of 30 lux and uniformity g1 = 0.2 could be achieved.GpaF
Six wide beam BEGA floodlights 8591 are installed in the walls of the ramp. A special design for two metal halide discharge lamps each HIT DE 150 W · 27 000 lumen. Due to the colour temperature required, the standard version for 400 W had to be reconstructed with a special reflector for two lamps of lower power.
Protection class IP 65, die cast aluminium and stainless steel. The gable and the inscription over the main entrance are floodlit by two very narrow beam BEGA floodlights 7405 from a distance of some 20 m.;

The east side
For the large free space on the east side of the building, the architecture requires not only a floodlight from an extremely low mounting height but also light from just a few locations. At the same time, everything should be almost invisible by day.
For this reason, BEGA in-ground floodlights 8720 were used which we specially developed for this project. These floodlights made it possible to fully illuminate the façade from just two locations each of 4 m² with 13 floodlights each to the lower edge of the frieze.
As this lower limit of the light distribution is straight, it was possible to avoid the light cone which is inevitably created by conventional equipment

The north side + south side
The structures of the north side and south side of the Reichstag building are to a great extent identical. The lighting problem was similar to that of the east side. However, it was possible to arrange the floodlights in a narrow strip running along the ground parallel to the façade. For this task, we developed the BEGA floodlight 8614 where the lamp and optical system are just above the earth's surface. The construction height is 50 mm. This floodlight is able to cover the entire height of the façade from base to frieze, despite a distance of approx. 20 m.~
The lower limit of the light distribution is straight, the otherwise inevitable light cone does not occur. This special construction was fitted with a metal halide discharge lamp 150 W · 14 000 lumen.6hw[3,
Eight groups of three in-ground floodlights illuminate each side with 2040 W · 168 000 lumen.~

The large distance between the walls of the 20 m wide stairway of the main entrance made it necessary to produce a special design for six recessed wall luminaires. For one metal halide discharge lamp HIT 35 W · 3400 lumen, symmetrical light distribution, ring louvres, optical safety glass.
The portals on the east side are illuminated by BEGA recessed wall luminaires 2942 with 1 fluorescent lamp TC-D 18 W · 1200 lumen. They are equipped for uniform light distribution with white coated safety glass. Mounting heights about 0.5 m.

The roof terrace
To illuminate the large roof terrace of the Reichstag building, the only possible concept was to provide light which primarily takes into account the high turnover of visitors: an entirely glarefree light from a low mounting height. Any other type of illumination would have seriously disturbed the architecture of the roof landscape - and not only by the shape and type of installation of the luminaires. Visitors to this observation platform would also have been considerably hindered by the glare effect of the lamps. The intention was for visitors to experience an impressive view of the illuminated city by standing in the dark. For this reason, 79 BEGA location luminaires 2136 were chosen for a fluorescent lamp TC 9 W · 600 lumen.
A stainless steel grid gives this luminaire an exceptionally high degree of stability which is especially important in public areas.
It also directs the light with high efficiency so that no diffuse light can emerge above the horizontal line.

The dome - landmark in lightE
Apart from the dome, all the luminaires outside were supposed to remain as discreet as possible._
The aim was to realize an average illuminance of 25 lux and a uniformity gl = 0.2 for all four sides of the building. Greater illuminance was not required.
The dome was intended to dominate in light
This was achieved with 48 BEGA in-ground floodlights 8715 for one metal halide discharge lamp HIT-DE 70 W · 6300 lumen.
They illuminate the glass dome completely, half installed in the dome floor and half in the floor of the observation platform.
A considerable amount of light also penetrates to the outside
Additionally installed - invisible to visitors - are eight stage luminaires which direct effective, very narrow beam light to the outside. The illuminated dome really is the highlight of this very impressive building illumination.

City of the arts and siences
Cultural assets should be freely accessible to all. And for this reason, the city of Valencia has constructed "The City of the Arts and Sciences" on its eastern outskirts.
The immense space is divided by one street into two areas which are interconnected via a common central axis. The smaller area houses The Palace of the Arts, exhibiting every type of art. The Science Museum and Planetarium are located on the other larger area. All the buildings are surrounded by water and are accessible via an axial footbridge.
The Planetarium is situated concentrically on the connecting axis between the museum complexes. It has an enclosed hemispheric dome made of reinforced concrete, and under this the circular auditorium is located. It is surrounded by an outer filigree shell which can be opened by means of a movable metal construction.

Light in water
Water covers large areas of the complex and comes directly up to the building. The surface mirrors the adjoining surroundings and one associates the buildings with islands in a sea of floating sculptures. The incident sunlight is reflected on the façades of the buildings and thus enhances the vividness of the structure by the interplay of light and shade. These impressions are intensified at night by the artificial lighting. BEGA was able to make a positive contribution here with luminaires specially designed for lighting in water and for lighting emerging from water. For example, water surfaces are illuminated from the waterside and the building perimeters by BEGA in-ground floodlights 8925 for two tungsten halogen lamps 100 W · 12 V. The movable outer shell is illuminated from the water by BEGA underwater floodlights 8510 for one reflector lamp PAR 55 12V · 300W.

Light from the ground
Visitors to this complex are guided over footbridges which connect the buildings with each other by an axis. Some areas of these footbridges are under water and covered with glass. The water surfaces under the walk-over glass plates are illuminated. They give a soft, uniform light with low luminance and produce an atmospheric scenario. Here too BEGA underwater floodlights assist in realizing this unequivocally interesting lighting concept. BEGA in-ground floodlights are installed in the paved areas and fulfil their purpose discreetly. These luminaires are part of a wide-ranging programme of drive-over floodlights and location luminaires for in-ground installation. They are designed for pressure loads of 1000 - 5000 kg and luminous fluxes of 250 - 15 000 lumen.
